macular degeneration (MD)

macular degeneration (MD) /mak″yələr/ [L, macula, spot, degenerare, to deviate] , a progressive deterioration of the maculae of the retina. Dry macular degeneration is associated with thinning of macular tissues, the deposition of pigment in the macula, or a combination of the two. Wet macular degeneration is the result of new vessel formation that can leak blood and fluid. See also age-related macular degeneration.
