low forceps [ME, low + L, forceps, pair of tongs] , an obstetric operation in which forceps are used to deliver a baby whose head is on the pelvic floor. The procedure is performed most often as an elective procedure to shorten normal labor and to control delivery, usually in conjunction with anesthesia and episiotomy. It is commonly required for the delivery of mothers whose expulsive powers have been weakened by analgesia, anesthesia, or fatigue. Also called outlet forceps, prophylactic forceps. Compare high forceps, mid forceps, natural childbirth, spontaneous delivery. See also forceps delivery, obstetric forceps.
