leucovorin calcium /lo̅o̅′kəvôr″in/ , a reduced form of folic acid that can be used immediately for nucleic acid synthesis. ▪ INDICATIONS: It is prescribed in the treatment of an overdose of a folic acid antagonist and certain cases of megaloblastic anemia. It is also used for leucovorin “rescue” after high-dose methotrexate therapy in osteosarcoma to diminish the toxicity of the methotrexate. ▪ CONTRAINDICATIONS: Anemia caused by vitamin B12 deficiency or known hypersensitivity to this drug prohibits its use. ▪ ADVERSE EFFECTS: Hypersensitivity reactions may occur.
