intestinal apoplexy

intestinal apoplexy, the sudden occlusion of one of the three principal arteries to the intestine by an embolism or a thrombus. This condition leads rapidly to necrosis of intestinal tissue and is often fatal. Treatment is usually surgical. The occlusion is removed, and often the affected portion of the bowel is resected. See also atherosclerosis.
