intervention /in′tərven″shən/ [L, inter + venire, to come] , 1. an act performed to prevent harm to a patient or to improve the mental, emotional, or physical function of a patient. A physiological process may be monitored or enhanced, or a pathological process may be arrested or controlled. Independent intervention is any health care activity pertaining to aspects of professional practice that are encompassed by licensure and law and require no supervision or direction from others. Interdependent intervention refers to any health care activity carried out by one health care professional in collaboration with another. See also nursing intervention. 2. (in occupational therapy) the process and skilled actions taken by occupational therapy practitioners in collaboration with clients to facilitate engagement in occupation related to health participation. The intervention process includes the plan, implementation, and review.
