indinavir, an antiretroviral protease inhibitor. ▪ INDICATIONS: It is prescribed in the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus infection. ▪ CONTRAINDICATIONS: It should not be given to patients with a risk of kidney stones. It should be administered with other medications to reduce the risk of resistance development. ▪ ADVERSE EFFECTS: Protease inhibitors increase plasma glucose, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels and cause a redistribution of body fat toward the center. Indinavir also can cause nephrolithiasis and hyperbilirubinemia.
