hypoproteinemia /hī′pōprō′tēnē″mē·ə/ [Gk, hypo + proteios, first rank, haima, blood] , abnormally decreased plasma protein, accompanied by edema, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. It may be caused by renal failure and burns. Also called intestinal lymphangiectasia. Also spelled hypoproteinaemia.
