hyperplastic gingivitis [Gk, hyper, excess, plassein, to mold; L, gingiva, gum; Gk, itis, inflammation] , inflammation and enlargement of the gums caused by an increase in the number of cells, usually because of bacterial plaque accumulation. Compare hypertrophic gingivitis.
