hyperlipoproteinemia /hī′pərlip′ōprō′tēnē″mē·ə/ [Gk, hyper + lipos, fat, proteios, first rank, haima, blood] , any of a large group of inherited and acquired disorders of lipoprotein metabolism characterized by greater than normal amounts of certain protein-bound lipids and other fatty substances in the blood and usually low levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Hyperlipoproteinemia causes atherosclerosis and pancreatitis. The treatment includes dietary control of fats and/or saturated fats and cholesterol. Diet may reduce specific lipoprotein levels in the blood. Medication and other treatment vary according to the specific metabolic defect, its cause, and its prognosis. Also called dyslipidemia.
