human herpesvirus 8, a virus in the family Herpesviridae that has been implicated as the causative agent of Kaposi’s sarcoma, a rare form of cancer occasionally seen in AIDS patients, and primary effusion lymphoma. The predominant route of transmission is sexual activity. The virus may also be transmitted through blood contact in IV drug use. Treatment is currently experimental.
