holoprosencephaly

holoprosencephaly /hol′ōpros′ensef″əlē/ [Gk, holos + pro, before, enkephalos, brain] , a congenital defect caused by the failure of the prosencephalon to divide into hemispheres during embryonic development. It is characterized by multiple midline facial defects, including cyclopia in severe cases.
