HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor, any of a group of drugs that competitively inhibit the enzyme catalyzing the rate-limiting step in cholesterol biosynthesis and that are used to lower plasma lipoprotein levels in the treatment of hyperlipoproteinemia. Also called statin.
