halogenated hydrocarbon /həloj″ənā′tid/ [Gk, hals, salt, genein, to produce, hydor, water; L, carbo, coal] , a volatile liquid used as an inhalation anesthetic, administered in combination with oxygen and/or nitrous oxide. The only halogenated hydrocarbon used for anesthesia is halothane. See also halothane.
