hairy leukoplakia, a form of leukoplakia characterized by a white plaque that is markedly folded in appearance or smooth and is often visible on one or both lateral borders of the tongue. It is associated with severe immunodeficiency, occurs in human immunodeficiency virus–infected patients, and results from infection with the Epstein-Barr virus.
