gray column, any of the three longitudinally oriented thickenings in the spinal cord, composed of gray nervous tissue and containing the nerve cell bodies. They are commonly referred to as horns because in transverse sections of the spinal cord they have the appearance of horns. See also anterior horn, lateral horn, posterior horn.
