gold sodium thiomalate, an antirheumatic drug. ▪ INDICATIONS: It is prescribed for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. ▪ CONTRAINDICATIONS: Severe debilitation, systemic lupus erythematosus, renal or liver disease, blood dyscrasias, Sjögren’s syndrome (in rheumatoid arthritis), or known hypersensitivity to this drug or to other gold or heavy metal salts prohibits its use. ▪ ADVERSE EFFECTS: Among the most serious adverse effects are various blood dyscrasias, renal damage, and allergic reactions. Dermatitis, stomatitis, and lesions of the mucous membranes also may occur.
