glipiZIDE /glip″izīd/ , an oral antidiabetic drug. ▪ INDICATIONS: It is prescribed as an adjunct to diet and exercise to lower blood glucose levels of patients with type 2 (non‒insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus. ▪ CONTRAINDICATIONS: The dosage may have to be adjusted for patients who are taking drugs such as diuretics that increase blood glucose levels; elderly, debilitated, or malnourished patients are at risk of development of hypoglycemia. ▪ ADVERSE EFFECTS: Among the most serious adverse effects are nausea, heartburn, and skin allergies.
