freckle

freckle [ME, freken] , a brown or tan macule on the skin that results from exposure to sunlight. There is an inherited tendency to freckling, and it is most frequently seen in persons with red hair. Freckles are harmless, but people who freckle easily should avoid excessive sun exposure or use protective sunscreens because they have a tendency toward development of more serious actinic skin changes. Compare lentigo.
