familial polyposis

familial polyposis, an abnormal condition characterized by multiple polyps in the colon and rectum. The disease has high malignancy potential and is inherited as a heterozygous, autosomal-dominant trait. Total proctocolectomy eliminates the risk of cancer, which, if untreated, occurs before 40 years of age. Genetic counseling is advised. Kinds include Gardner’s syndrome. See also polyposis.
