etomidate

etomidate /etom″idāt/ , a short-acting, hypnotic nonbarbiturate intravenous agent used for induction of general anesthesia. It has minimal adverse cardiovascular and respiratory effects, thus providing a greater margin of safety in patients with or at risk for heart disease. Adverse effects include transient reduction in adrenal gland cortisol release, pain on injection, and involuntary muscle movements.
