ethionamide /eth′ē·ənam″īd/ , a tuberculostatic antibacterial. ▪ INDICATIONS: It is prescribed for the treatment of tuberculosis in conjunction with other drugs when frontline therapy has failed. ▪ CONTRAINDICATIONS: Existing liver damage or known hypersensitivity to this drug prohibits its use. ▪ ADVERSE EFFECTS: Among the more serious adverse effects are skin rash, jaundice, mental depression, and GI side effects.
