esterified estrogen /ester″ifīd/ , an ester of natural estrogen. ▪ INDICATIONS: It is prescribed for menstrual irregularities, contraception, and menopausal symptoms. ▪ CONTRAINDICATIONS: It should not be used in anticipation of cardiovascular benefits because results from a clinical trial (HERS) found that its use was associated with an increased risk of unstable angina and myocardial infarction. Pregnancy, known or suspected breast cancer, thrombophlebitis, vaginal bleeding of unknown origin, or known hypersensitivity to this drug prohibits its use. ▪ ADVERSE EFFECTS: Among the more serious adverse effects are gallbladder disease, thromboembolic disease, and a possible increase in risk of cancer.
