esophagectomy /esof′əjek″təmē/ [Gk, oisophagos + ektomē, excision] , a surgical procedure in which all or part of the esophagus is removed, as may be required to treat severe recurrent bleeding, esophageal varices, or esophageal cancer. Also spelled oesophagectomy.
