ergotamine tartrate /ərgot″əmēn/ , a vasoconstrictor that binds to several receptor populations (e.g., alpha-adrenergic, dopamine, serotonin) and, depending upon the receptor, can be an agonist or antagonist. ▪ INDICATIONS: It is prescribed to abort or prevent vascular headaches such as migraines. ▪ CONTRAINDICATIONS: Pregnancy, peripheral vascular disease, infectious disease, or known hypersensitivity to this drug prohibits its use. ▪ ADVERSE EFFECTS: Among the more serious adverse effects are vomiting, diarrhea, thirst, tingling of fingers and toes, and increased blood pressure. Fetal death may occur if it is used during pregnancy.
