ergoloid mesylate /ur″gōloid/ , an ergot alkaloid preparation with psychotropic actions but lacking significant vasoconstrictor or vasodilator effects. INDICATIONS: It is occasionally prescribed in the treatment of symptomatic age-related decline in mental capacity with an unknown cause, as in senile dementia, but its efficacy is not well established.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: Psychosis or known sensitivity to this drug prohibits its use.
ADVERSE EFFECTS: Among the most serious adverse effects are sublingual irritation, transient nausea, and gastric disturbance.
