erectile /irek″til, -tīl/ [L, erigere, to erect] , capable of being erected or raised to an erect position. The term is usually used to describe spongy tissue of the penis or clitoris that becomes turgid and erectile when filled with blood. It also may be used when referring to the epidermal tissue involved in the appearance of “goose bumps” (piloerection) in response to fear, anger, cold, or other stimuli.
