epididymitis /ep′idid′imī″tis/ [Gk, epi + didymos + itis, inflammation] , acute or chronic inflammation of the epididymis. It may result from venereal disease, urinary tract infection, prostatitis, prostatectomy, or prolonged use of indwelling catheters. Symptoms include fever and chills; pain in the groin; and tender, swollen epididymides. Treatment includes bed rest, scrotal support, antiinflammatory medications, and antibiotics, as appropriate.
