empyema

empyema /em′pī·ē″mə, em′pē·ē″mə/ [Gk, en + ipyon, pus] , an accumulation of pus in the pleural space, as a result of bacterial infection, such as pleurisy or tuberculosis. It is usually removed by surgical incision, aspiration, and drainage. Antibiotics, usually penicillin or vancomycin, are administered to combat the underlying infection. Oxygen therapy may also be administered.
