electrocautery /ilek′trōkô″tərē/ [Gk, elektron + kauterion, branding iron] , the application of a needle or snare heated by electric current for the destruction of tissue, such as for removing warts or polyps and cauterizing small blood vessels to limit blood loss during surgery.
