effacement

effacement /ifās″mənt/ [Fr, effacer, to erase] , thinning of the cervical shape and shortening of the cervical canal during labor from its normal 2 cm to a tissue-thin edge, which actually seems to disappear at full dilation (10 cm). Effacement is usually expressed as a percentage from the start of labor. See also birth, cervix, dilation, station.
