echothiophate iodide /-thī″ōfāt/ , an anticholinesterase used for ophthalmic purposes. ▪ INDICATIONS: It is prescribed for the treatment of chronic open-angle glaucoma and accommodative esotropia. ▪ CONTRAINDICATIONS: Uveal inflammation, most types of angle-closure glaucoma, or known hypersensitivity to this drug prohibits its use. ▪ ADVERSE EFFECTS: Among the more serious adverse effects are retinal detachment, nonreversible cataract, lens opacity, activation of iritis or uveitis, and iris cysts.
