disopyramide phosphate /dī′sōpir″əmīd/ , a cardiac antiarrhythmic. ▪ INDICATIONS: It is prescribed in the treatment of atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, ventricular premature complexes, and coupled ventricular tachycardias. ▪ CONTRAINDICATIONS: Cardiogenic shock, heart failure, preexisting second- or third-degree heart block in the absence of a pacemaker, sick sinus syndrome, or known hypersensitivity to this drug prohibits its use. ▪ ADVERSE EFFECTS: Among the more serious adverse reactions are severe hypotension, precipitation of heart failure, and aggravation of heart block. Urinary retention, dry mouth, and constipation commonly occur.
