diltiazem /diltī″əzam/ , a calcium channel blocker or calcium antagonist. ▪ INDICATIONS: It is prescribed for the treatment of vasospastic and effort-associated angina, in addition to hypertension. ▪ CONTRAINDICATIONS: Sick sinus syndrome, second- or third-degree atrioventricular block, or hypotension prohibits its use. ▪ ADVERSE EFFECTS: Among the more serious adverse reactions are edema, arrhythmia, bradycardia, hypotension, syncope, rash, headache, and dizziness.
