dilation and evacuation (D&E)

dilation and evacuation (D&E) [L, dilatare, to widen, evacuare, to empty] , the removal of the products of conception, using suction and sharp curettage and forceps, usually associated specifically with pregnancies of 16 weeks or more in gestational age. The addition of forceps is to facilitate removal of fetal parts too large for the suction catheter.
