desquamative interstitial pneumonia (DIP), a respiratory disease characterized by an accumulation of cellular matter in the alveoli and bronchial tubes, affecting people with a history of smoking in their 30s and 40s. It leads to a fibrotic condition with symptoms of coughing, chest pain, weight loss, and dyspnea. Treatment is with corticosteroids, oxygen, and supportive medical therapy. Seventy percent of patients survive 10 years or longer.
