cytapheresis

cytapheresis /sī′tōfer″əsis/ [Gk, kytos + aphairesis, withdrawal] , selective removal of a cellular component of blood by apheresis. Red cells, granulocytes, or platelets may be harvested. Cytapheresis is used to collect specific components from blood donors, or, in the case of therapeutic cytapheresis, to remove excess cellular components from patients with blood disorders.
