crisis /krī″sis/ [Gk, krisis, turning point] , 1. a transition for better or worse in the course of a disease, usually indicated by a marked change in the intensity of signs and symptoms. 2. a turning point in events affecting the emotional state of a person, such as death or divorce. A crisis can result in personality growth or personality disorganization. 3. a characteristically self-limiting period of from 4 to 6 weeks that constitutes a transitional phase representing both the danger of increased psychological vulnerability and an opportunity for personal growth.
