cosmetic dermatitis /kosmet″ik/ [Gk, kosmesis, adornment] , a form of irritant or allergic contact dermatitis caused by ingredients in cosmetic products. The meaning is commonly broadened to include soaps, shampoos, deodorants, and depilatories in addition to perfumes, coloring agents, and toiletries. This inflammatory skin disease can be manifested in a broad spectrum, ranging from erythema to eczema.
