conjunctivitis of newborn [L, conjunctivus, connecting, itis, inflammation; ME, newe + borne] , a condition characterized by a purulent discharge from the eyes of an infant during the first 3 weeks of life. Frequent causes include gonococcal and chlamydial infections, which may lead to blindness if untreated. Also called ophthalmia neonatorum.
