cone biopsy, surgical removal of a cone-shaped segment of the cervix, including both epithelial and endocervical tissue. The cone of tissue is excised and examined microscopically to establish a precise diagnosis, usually to confirm or evaluate a positive Papanicolaou’s test result. After surgery, hemorrhage sometimes occurs. If bleeding occurs 7 to 10 days later, suturing may be required. See also biopsy, cone.
