compensating filter

compensating filter, a device used to absorb radiation during the radiographic process. The compensating filter is placed over a body area to compensate for body areas of various thicknesses and to even out the resulting radiographic densities. For example, a wedge may be placed over a foot with the thick portion over the toes and the thin edge toward the heel to compensate for the range of thickness of the foot. See also bowtie filter.
