colestipol hydrochloride /kōles″tipol/ , an antihyperlipidemic that acts by sequestering bile acids in the intestine for excretion, thus reducing plasma levels of cholesterol when the liver removes cholesterol to synthesize new bile. ▪ INDICATIONS: It is prescribed in the treatment of hypercholesterolemia and xanthoma. ▪ CONTRAINDICATIONS: Biliary obstruction or known hypersensitivity to this drug prohibits its use. ▪ ADVERSE EFFECTS: Among the more serious adverse reactions are skin rash; fecal impaction; and a deficiency of vitamins A, D, and K.
