clotrimazole /klōtrim″əzōl/ , a broad-spectrum antifungal agent of the imidazole group used in topical applications to treat fungal and yeast infections, including tinea pedis, tinea corporis, tinea versicolor, oral candidiasis, and vaginal candidiasis. ▪ INDICATIONS: It is prescribed in the treatment of superficial fungal infections and candidal vulvovaginitis. Oral troches are used for prophylaxis against fungal infections in neutropenic patients. ▪ CONTRAINDICATIONS: Known hypersensitivity to this drug prohibits its use. It is not prescribed for ophthalmic use; contact with eyes should be avoided. ▪ ADVERSE EFFECTS: The most serious adverse reactions are severe hypersensitivity reactions of the skin. The use of oral troches often causes liver enzyme abnormalities.
