clofibrate /klō″fəbrāt/ , an antihyperlipidemic. ▪ INDICATIONS: It is prescribed in the treatment of high blood levels of triglycerides occurring alone or in combination with high cholesterol levels. ▪ CONTRAINDICATIONS: Liver or kidney dysfunction, pregnancy, lactation, biliary cirrhosis, or known hypersensitivity to this drug prohibits its use. ▪ ADVERSE EFFECTS: Among the more serious adverse reactions are nausea, diarrhea, weight gain, and a syndrome resembling influenza. This drug interacts with many other drugs and should not be used together with the HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins) used to lower plasma cholesterol levels because this combination has an increased risk for myositis and rhabdomyolysis.
