cleft lip

cleft lip, a multifactorial congenital anomaly consisting of one or more clefts in the upper lip (with or without cleft palate) that result from a failure in the embryo of the maxillary and median nasal processes to close. Treatment is surgical repair, usually in infancy. Formerly called harelip. See also cleft palate, multifactorial inheritance.
