chronic serous synovitis, inflammation of a synovial membrane associated with copious nonpurulent material, usually painful, particularly on motion, due to effusion in a synovial sac. It may be caused by rheumatic fever, rheumatoid arthritis, tuberculosis, trauma, gout, or other conditions. See also chronic synovitis.
