chromomere /krō″məmir/ [Gk, chroma + meros, part] , any of the series of beadlike structures that lie along the chromonema of a chromosome during the early stages of cell division. Chromomeres are most often seen in prophase II of meiosis. The position of each chromomere is relatively constant for each chromosome and probably reflects the chromosome’s DNA coiling pattern. Also called idiomere. See also karyomere.
