cervicitis /sur′visī″tis/ , inflammation of the cervix, usually associated with bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis, or candidiasis. May be asymptomatic or associated with often foul-smelling, purulent discharge. Often recurrent due to reexposure. Diagnosis is by microscopic evaluation of the discharge and/or culture. Cervicitis is treated with an appropriate antibiotic or sometimes cautery. Kinds include acute cervicitis, chronic cervicitis.
