caudal eminence

caudal eminence, a tail-like eminence produced by a proliferating mass of mesodermal cells at the caudal end of the early vertebrate embryo. It is the remnant of the primitive node and the precursor of hindgut, adjacent notochord and somites, and the caudal part of the spinal cord. Also called tail bud.
