carbuncle /kär″bungkəl/ [L, carbunculus, little coal] , a large site of staphylococcal infection containing purulent matter in deep, interconnecting subcutaneous pockets. Pus eventually discharges to the skin surface through openings. Common sites for carbuncles are the back of the neck and the buttocks. Treatment may include the use of antibiotics, hot compresses, and surgical drainage. Compare furuncle.
